Mr Freedom fabric

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

I tried to photograph the fabric that Tommy has given to Mr G to sell through The Look . It’s hard to capture the exact colours of fabric screen printed 30 years ago - they’re so rich and pleasing to the eye because they don’t look like the colours of today.

I’m really taken with the fabric - the crepe is ever-so-slightly stiff where it’s printed, the detail (particularly the boots) is wonderful and overall the piece could be a flag for the early-Seventies, pop-infatuated store.

I hope it finds a loving home.

Hat Parade and Rita in the Doghouse

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Such a fun night at Nick’s Doghouse show at Tatty Devine’s Brick Lane shop. I stood beside Rita on the wall and looked proud, there were dogs and kids dressed as dogs and some lovely people. I can’t wait for the full film at the Horse Hospital this week.

We popped next door to a really charming exhibition in the Bernstock Spiers store, where Hormazd Narielwalla was showing a series of illustrations based on Paul and Selma’s hat patterns.

Playful and exquisitely realised, with more than a touch of the Raj - do go see more of his work!

Winter looks

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The weather is closing in in London, I’m sorry to say. Perhaps we have one or two hotties left but my toes were decidedly chilly tonight coming home. Now that the Elaine look is well and truly ‘out there‘ I’m searching out a new winter vibe.

I know Mr G won’t appreciate the silhouette particularly but I’m feeling a little Betty Goodwin is a frontrunner…

Quai Branly

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Friday before last in Paris (how time flies!) we visited the Musée du quai Branly to take in the architecture*, but I found the collection of art from non-western backgrounds much more interesting.

The exhibits were vital and exciting. Unsettling too. There were short films by anthropologists as recent as the seventies, capturing some of the costume and objects in use. I had forgotten the French’s fascination for ‘primitive’. Walking around I saw Picasso here, Gaugin and Rousseau there, JP Goude and Gaultier too.  Indigenous life in their colonies seemed to infiltrate art and visual culture from the very beginning. Seeing the ‘bambara’ collection at the YSL exhibition in the afternoon just cemented the connections…

*Jean Nouvel’s architecture wasn’t as great. I loved the colours, I loved Patrick Blanc’s plant wall and the landscaping and planting. The museum itself seemed to have so much circulation space - the walk from entry to the exhibits was about ten minutes! My architect buddies felt it was badly detailed, but fortunately I don’t notice - I’m a broad brush stroke girl.

An exhibition of Rachel Whiteread drawings accompanies a new monograph by Prestel.  Alongside the drawings are some pretty beguiling collections of objects.

New Years Resolutions

Moisturise more.

And post more regularly.

2009 was a strange year of highs and lows, and I gather from facebook and my google reader that there are many many people out there very glad to put it behind them. I wonder what 2010 will hold. I hope to make headway with personal projects, and not get so lost in work. Make the moments count. Even the dread commute.

I hope my new bike will set the momentum for 2010.

Illicit

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Mr G has posted my breast on Facebook. And Alice no soon as renounced childbirth as had a hormonal turnaround and wants it all over again.

Penny will blame it on Mercury being in retrograde.
